Koto Design - Stories about our award winning architecture.

The Koto blog features the latest in modern design and architecture with a focus on small buildings and cabin design.

Launching the Jōki Sauna

In partnership with cabin makers and designers Out of the Valley, we are delighted to unveil our first collaborative wellness product: the Jōki Elements Sauna (Japanese for steam).

The invigorating Jōki Sauna is an outdoor, modular sauna cabin - joining a series of innovative Koto spa Element products aimed at redefining relaxation and wellness in natural settings.

Combining the architectural expertise of Koto in creating sustainable design-led structures with Out of the Valley's mastery in crafting stunning timber cabins, the result is a fusion of design and function that is set to enhance the wellness industry.

‘Harmonious Design’

Testament to the beauty of simplicity, the 4-6 person sauna features large glazing, clean lines, natural materials, and seamless integration with the surrounding environment.

The rejuvenating Jōki Elements Sauna is designed with two tiers of benches which allows the user access to a greater thermal range. A sweeping wrap-around deck provides the perfect place to relax and dress after a sauna session, whilst a large overhang on the rear wall creates weather screening over the changing area and log store.

Arriving with the option of traditional wood-fired heating, or cutting-edge electrical heating, the sauna is built to be accessible for all site types.

Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese design principles, the combination exemplifies elegance and minimalism, promising a relaxation experience unlike any other.

‘Sustainable Materials.’

Jōki is crafted with local, responsibly sourced, high-quality timber, focussing on thermal efficiency and the use of cultivated materials. Each sauna is insulated using natural and breathable insulation.

"Our partnership with Out of the Valley is a harmonious coming together of our shared vision for sustainable, nature-inspired design. We are thrilled to introduce a sauna experience that seamlessly combines wellness and architectural innovation."

Johnathon Little - Co-founder of Koto Design.

"The sauna collaboration represents a significant milestone in our journey to create spaces that enhance our well-being while respecting the environment. We are excited to push the boundaries of sustainable design and offer a sanctuary for individuals seeking a deeper connection with nature."

About Koto.

Modular Architecture - Sustainable by necessity.

Koto delivers beautifully crafted, architect designed, energy neutral homes and cabins. All our buildings are produced to the very highest standards and delivered whole and complete directly to your site. Every Koto home has been crafted with the utmost respect for both our environment and the people we work with. The Koto studio co-founded by Zoe, Johnathon and Theo design modular houses, cabins and sculptural small buildings, with each one drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design and culture. Co-founders, Johnathon and Zoë Little, returned from living on the shores of Norway’s fjords with a deep appreciation of the local aesthetic and environment. As the brand progressed, Koto began looking further east to the minimalist world of Japanese design and their focus on social functionality. This is something that has always fascinated co-founder and architect Theo Dales. Koto shares their emphasis on clean and simple details that provide a sense of calm. This exploration has helped Koto’s designs evolve into the carefully-considered works they are today.

“As both designers and parents, we recognise the dynamic relationship between nature, quality design and one of life’s great luxuries – spending time with friends and family. Each and every Koto home embodies this ethos.”
Zoe Little - Co-Founder Koto.

About Out of the Valley

Out of the Valley create cabins and saunas that help connect people with the rhythms of nature. Working with the beauty and durability of wood, our design-led structures invite a transformative return to a simpler way of living and a renewed affinity with the land. Uniting modern construction methods with a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, everything we make is designed to endure and bring joy for generations to come.

Out of the Valley started with a single cabin, built in a deep wooded valley by the river Teign, on the edge of Dartmoor in England. Driven by a desire to embrace off-grid living in close connection with nature, Rupert constructed the cabin as a home for himself, where he could enjoy a simpler way of living. Word soon spread, and others were interested in similar sanctuaries for themselves. And so Out of the Valley was born.

Comprising of designers and craftspeople, the Out of the Valley team are experts in bio-construction and have a wealth of knowledge in off-grid technologies and the principles of biophilic design – that is, the design of structures that invite their inhabitants to connect with the surrounding natural landscape. We bring this specialist knowledge and wisdom to every project we undertake.
