Koto’s modular home arrives in the Outer Hebrides

‘Koto’s Uist House arrives to site via land and water.’

Koto are very excited to share news on the delivery of our latest bespoke modular home, set within the stunning North Uist National Scenic Area at Claddach Valley, North Uist. Following a successful planning application in 2021, Uist House has been expertly constructed in the factory by our build partner Woods of Wales, and delivered via land and water to the Outer Hebrides Island.

Each of the 7 Koto modules have travelled the picturesque journey to site, transported through rural Scotland and sailed across waterways on vehicle ferries. Now, the team are busy finalising the project on-premise ready for a September launch.

The location.

North Uist is a small island situated off the northwest coast of the Scottish mainland with a landscape of scenic sea lochs, peatland and rare wildlife. The island, known for its rich history and strong community spirit, is heavily indented with natural sheltered harbours and expansive beaches which stretch for miles.

From the Uist House site, the distance views look through the inlet past Vallay Island towards Harris, and the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

The design.

The Uist House concept was developed to work with the surrounding scenery to form a sympathetic response to the landforms, views and naturally occurring colours and tones in the landscape.

Koto has created the contextual and design-led family home to maximise the beautiful sweeping views which are framed from the living spaces and other rooms, taking advantage of the light and breathtaking landscape.

The interiors of the house have been designed by Koto Living with a focus on natural materials and texture, creating a connection between the house and the vast nature outside. The furniture will consist of a range of unique pieces made by designers in the UK, Scandinavia and around the world whose work complements the timeless aesthetic of our homes and cabins.

About Koto.

Modular Architecture - Sustainable by necessity.

Koto delivers beautifully crafted, architect designed, energy neutral homes and cabins. All our buildings are produced to the very highest standards and delivered whole and complete directly to your site. Every Koto home has been crafted with the utmost respect for both our environment and the people we work with. The Koto studio co-founded by Zoe, Johnathon and Theo design modular houses, cabins and sculptural small buildings, with each one drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design and culture. Co-founders, Johnathon and Zoë Little, returned from living on the shores of Norway’s fjords with a deep appreciation of the local aesthetic and environment. As the brand progressed, Koto began looking further east to the minimalist world of Japanese design and their focus on social functionality. This is something that has always fascinated co-founder and architect Theo Dales. Koto shares their emphasis on clean and simple details that provide a sense of calm. This exploration has helped Koto’s designs evolve into the carefully-considered works they are today.

“As both designers and parents, we recognise the dynamic relationship between nature, quality design and one of life’s great luxuries – spending time with friends and family. Each and every Koto home embodies this ethos.”
Zoe Little - Co-Founder Koto.
