The art of Scandinavian-Japanese interior design
The art of Scandinavian-Japanese interior design
Scandinavian-Japanese interior design is often described through the widely used term Japandi, yet the heart of the style reaches far beyond a trend. It reflects a shared design philosophy shaped by clarity, material honesty and a deep respect for nature. Koto Living draws on these principles to create interiors that feel intentional and restorative, holding a quiet presence that enriches daily life.
This blended approach values proportion and purpose. Rooms are shaped with natural materials, handcrafted details and soft light, inviting people to slow the tempo of living. The result is an atmosphere that brings warmth, stillness and a sense of harmony into every space.
Japandi: A shared language of calm and craftsmanship
Although separated by geography, Scandinavian and Japanese design traditions are closely aligned. Both cultures have long embraced simplicity and a thoughtful relationship with the natural world. Each believes that design can support wellbeing when it removes distraction, elevates quality and respects the materials that define a building.
Scandinavian-Japanese interior design is rooted in this meeting of ideas. Functional elements become beautiful through clarity of form. Spaces breathe because they are crafted with care. Light and proportion guide the way a room feels and flows. This shared visual language creates a calm foundation that supports human comfort.
Koto draws on these long-established philosophies to create a modern interpretation. The studio’s interiors are crafted with the balance and intention seen throughout its portfolio, where soft surfaces, natural textures and carefully selected objects form an environment that promotes relaxation and presence. The approach aligns with the wider Koto belief that homes should nurture the people who inhabit them as well as the landscapes that surround them.
The Scandinavian influence: Light, warmth and wellbeing
Scandinavian design is celebrated for its relationship with light. Northern latitudes experience long periods of low sun, so interiors evolved to welcome as much natural brightness as possible. Pale timber, soft textiles and warm neutral palettes support this intention, reflecting light gently across surfaces.
This clarity is matched with a strong sense of comfort. Scandinavian interiors are typically open, unforced and free from visual noise. Rooms feel uplifting and practical, shaped by materials that evoke both warmth and resilience.
Koto channels these principles through its use of timber, linen, textured stone and tactile fabrics. These choices contribute to the studio’s signature sense of quiet luxury, seen throughout projects from coastal residences to rural hotels. The atmosphere is one of understated tranquillity. Every piece is chosen for longevity and touch, helping create restorative environments that encourage people to unwind.
The Japanese influence: Simplicity, balance and flow
Japanese design brings a complementary set of values. Many traditional interiors prioritise negative space and proportion. Items are chosen sparingly, with each object fulfilling a defined purpose. This restraint allows materials to speak clearly and fosters a sense of mindful living.
Texture plays a significant role. Natural fibres, handcrafted ceramics and organic finishes introduce subtle variation that enriches a space without overwhelming it. Imperfection is celebrated, particularly through the wabi-sabi philosophy. Surfaces that age gracefully or reveal traces of craft remind inhabitants of the value of time and touch.
Koto reflects these principles through its approach to layout and detail. Flow is central to the studio’s work, ensuring that every room supports movement and calm. Furniture is positioned to guide sightlines. Windows are framed to honour views. Surfaces use organic textures that connect inhabitants with nature. Throughout the studio’s projects, from remote Hebridean homes to serene wellness suites, this balanced approach brings clarity and grounding to contemporary living.
Koto’s interpretation: Where two worlds meet
Koto’s design language merges Nordic warmth with Japanese stillness. The result is a cohesive response that defines the essence of Scandinavian-Japanese interior design. This interpretation feels both familiar and elevated. Elements are crafted with precision yet never appear overly rigid. Natural materials soften architectural structure. Handcrafted pieces introduce character without adding weight.
The Koto approach consistently returns to balance and intention. Each project begins with a sensitivity to site and use. Interiors are planned to support connection between the inhabitants and their surroundings, whether that means coastal light drifting into a timber-clad space or woodland shadows filtering into a quiet cabin. Materials are celebrated for their integrity. Proportion is used to establish calm.
This union of influences is expressed throughout Koto’s portfolio. Floating residences, prefabricated homes and hospitality retreats all carry the same design language. The architecture offers protection while remaining open to its environment. The interiors translate this into warmth, softness and a feeling of sanctuary. The outcome is a modern expression of quiet luxury shaped for people who value simplicity and crafted beauty.
Bringing philosophy to life through Koto interior design
Material honesty and sustainable beauty
Materials sit at the heart of Scandinavian-Japanese interior design. Timber, stone, ceramics and natural fabrics bring depth through their texture and authenticity. These choices make the presence of nature visible within a home and reinforce responsible design.
Koto’s interiors are built around this material honesty. The studio sources responsibly, selecting timber that feels warm to the touch and finishes that age with integrity. Linen, wool and textured fabrics add softness without unnecessary embellishment. Handcrafted details are introduced to celebrate the maker’s hand rather than decorative excess. These choices contribute to the studio's focus on creating sustainable interiors that respect both people and place.
The intention is clear. As materials weather gently, they gain character, deepening the atmosphere of a space over time. This long-term perspective speaks directly to Koto’s values and its belief that luxury can be quiet, grounded and environmentally conscious.
Furniture that completes the vision
Furniture shapes how a room is used and felt. For Scandinavian-Japanese interiors, proportion and restraint guide every decision. Pieces are chosen for their clarity and craftsmanship rather than ornamentation.
Koto designs and curates furniture with this mindset. Collections reflect the same sense of balance seen in the wider architecture. Every piece blends natural materials, refined forms and subtle detailing. The result is furniture that becomes part of a coherent whole rather than a standalone statement.
Clients can select curated packages or commission bespoke pieces. Both approaches ensure that each interior maintains harmony and flow. A room feels complete because every item has purpose and contributes to the wider atmosphere of calm.

Designed for life and light
Light is a defining force within Scandinavian-Japanese interior design. Daylight shifts across surfaces, bringing nuance and emotion into a space. Interior planning supports this movement so that rooms feel open, clear and connected to their surroundings.
Koto’s work places great emphasis on this interplay. Layouts are shaped to capture the best orientation. Windows frame changing views. Surfaces are chosen to reflect light gently, creating soft transitions as the day progresses.
Artificial lighting is layered with care. Ambient illumination supports evening calm. Accent lighting highlights texture or objects with subtle precision. Together, these elements help create interiors that feel expansive yet intimate, ready for everyday living, relaxation and reconnection.

About Koto.
Modular Architecture - Sustainable by necessity.
Koto delivers beautifully crafted, architect designed, energy neutral homes and cabins. All our buildings are produced to the very highest standards and delivered whole and complete directly to your site. Every Koto home has been crafted with the utmost respect for both our environment and the people we work with. The Koto studio co-founded by Zoe, Johnathon and Theo design modular houses, cabins and sculptural small buildings, with each one drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design and culture. Co-founders, Johnathon and Zoë Little, returned from living on the shores of Norway’s fjords with a deep appreciation of the local aesthetic and environment. As the brand progressed, Koto began looking further east to the minimalist world of Japanese design and their focus on social functionality. This is something that has always fascinated co-founder and architect Theo Dales. Koto shares their emphasis on clean and simple details that provide a sense of calm. This exploration has helped Koto’s designs evolve into the carefully-considered works they are today.
“As both designers and parents, we recognise the dynamic relationship between nature, quality design and one of life’s great luxuries – spending time with friends and family. Each and every Koto home embodies this ethos.”
