At koto our cabins and homes are built to last. They are built using a timber frame construction method, guaranteeing high performance and low energy. We create spaces that are functionally efficient and aesthetically pleasing.
The majority of the work takes place off-site, in and out of our workshops. This controlled environment enables complete accuracy, sheltered from the elements ensuring our master craftsmen have total control over the airtightness and energy efficiency of the structures. The controlled conditions within a factory mean a better quality of finish can be achieved and with fewer defects. Once air and water tight the structures are finished outside (weather permitting) Services can be tested within the factory prior to the units being dispatched giving our clients complete reassurance when the Koto lands onto site.
Wood has naturally insulating properties, giving a timber frame structure a good start in achieving a high level of thermal efficiency. Combined with our highly insulated wall build-ups, we have created low energy, high-performance timber frame cabins and homes.

Care of a timber frame house is also no different than you would expect to carry out on a conventional stone building. Due to using the dry method of construction and all of the cabin frames being precision-engineered off-site, the walls and floors are kept perfectly square, therefore avoiding the drying out cracks that are common with more traditional techniques.

Timber is classified as carbon neutral—as well as being an infinitely renewable material. People have been building with timber for thousands of years. Timber is ecological and sustainable and a truly renewable building material Grown quicker than it is used, this self-sustaining cycle is a direct contrast to other building materials such as brick or steel, with their finite supply of raw materials having to be extracted from the earth. It’s estimated, for example, that steel uses six times more energy to process than an equivalent amount of timber.
